KUCHING: Former English Premier League player Quinton Fortune would love to don the Crocs jersey if given the chance to play for Sarawak in the Super League.
The 36-year-old former Manchester United midfielder from South Africa indicated his interest after conducting a football clinic at Jubilee Ground here on Thursday.
He was specially flown in to Kuching by Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia (YR1M) to conduct the clinic and he was assisted by four coaches from FTSD.
“Sure, I would want to join Sarawak if given the chance,” he replied when asked about the possibility of playing for the state.
Fortune, who played for the Red Devils from 1999 to 2006, extended his gratitude to Mamee and YR1M for kindly inviting him to conduct the clinic.
He said there are many footballers in Sarawak who have the potential to go far in the sport.
“I hope this short clinic can give the youngsters some inspiration and motivation to become successful footballers in the future.”
“I am just hoping that they can stay focused and committed in their training if they wish to improve further in the game. What’s more important is that they must make concerted efforts to overcome their weaknesses and improve their skills from time to time,” he said.
Fortune said his main focus now is on getting a coaching licence so that he can become a full-time coach.
Sixty junior players aged between 16 and 19 participated in the clinic that was sponsored by YR1M.
The players involved were selected from local football academies including First Touch Soccer Development (FTSD), Kickalob Football Club, Star Football Club, and Sarawak Sports School SMK Tabuan Jaya.
Although it was a short clinic, the young players were able to gain valuable playing techniques and tips from Fortune.
Also present at the clinic were Semop assemblyman Semop Abdullah Saidol, Saribas assemblyman Mohammad Razi Sitam, YR1M advisor Irwan Zulkarnian Hasbie and PBB Satok Youth Movement’s chief Iskandar Sharkawi.
